Details that matter in a kitchen
The joint between countertop and backsplash should be caulked, not grouted. Counters and walls move at different rates, and grout at that line will crack within months. The same goes for inside corners. Outlet boxes often need extenders once tile adds thickness to the wall, which is a small item that is easy to forget until the cover plates don't sit flat.
On floors, the question is usually what's underneath. Many kitchens have one or two layers of old vinyl and underlayment stacked up, and tile over that stack can leave a lip at the dishwasher or make it hard to pull the appliance out later. Can you tile a backsplash without replacing our countertops?
Yes, as long as the counters are staying. We protect them, remove the old backsplash if there is one, and set the new tile down to the counter with a caulked joint. If new counters are coming soon, install them first so the tile meets the final surface.
Is herringbone much harder than subway tile?
It takes more layout time and more cuts, and the pattern needs to be centered so it reads straight. That affects labor more than material. It is one of the patterns we install most often.
Our kitchen opens into the living room. Do we have to redo both floors?
Not always, but a transition in the middle of an open space tends to look awkward. We can show you where a clean break could go, such as at a doorway or cabinet edge, or plan one continuous floor.
