What decides whether veneer lasts
On a fireplace, the heat and the existing surface matter. Painted brick usually needs the paint removed or a mechanical bond with lath before new mortar will hold. Clearances to the firebox opening follow the fireplace or insert manufacturer's requirements, so we check those before planning the stone at the opening. Outside, keep the bottom of the veneer above grade and above hardscape so it isn't wicking up ground water, and plan how the stone meets windows, doors and siding so water is directed out.
