Stone veneer in Philadelphia most often goes on a fireplace. A lot of rowhomes and twins still have a chimney breast in the front room, sometimes with a working fireplace and often with one that was closed off decades ago. Wrapping that breast in stacked stone gives the room a focal point without touching the flue.

Stone and Philadelphia houses
Northwest Philadelphia has its own stone. Many houses in Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Germantown and Roxborough were built of Wissahickon schist, the gray, mica-flecked stone quarried locally. Homeowners there sometimes want an interior wall, a new foundation skirt or a garden wall to relate to the original stonework. Manufactured veneer rarely matches schist convincingly up close. Natural thin veneer, cut from real stone, gets closer, and we will show you samples next to the existing wall before anyone orders.
In rowhomes, the chimney breast is usually brick covered in plaster or paint. Clean, unpainted, sound brick can take adhered veneer with a scratch coat applied directly. Painted brick or brick with a failing plaster skin needs metal lath mechanically fastened to the masonry first, so the mortar is not relying on the paint for its bond.
Exterior veneer is where Philadelphia adds rules. On properties listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places or inside a historic district, exterior changes visible from the street generally need Philadelphia Historical Commission review, and covering original brick with stone is the kind of change that gets a close look. Rear walls and interior work usually do not come up in that review, but we check the property before planning exterior work.

Walkthrough & estimate
We look at the wall, what it is made of and its condition, and talk through stone types. The estimate is free.
Samples and layout
You see stone samples on site, and we plan corners, the top edge and how the stone meets the mantel, hearth or grade.
Prep
Protect the room, remove loose material, install barrier and lath where needed and apply the scratch coat.
Setting the stone
Set corners first, then the field, keeping joints consistent for dry-stack or grouted looks.
Pointing and cleanup
Point the joints if the style calls for it, clean the face of the stone and review the finished wall with you.
Moisture, weight and the fireplace itself
Philadelphia's freeze-thaw winters are hard on any exterior wall that holds water. Exterior veneer has to shed and drain: a weather-resistive barrier behind the lath, a weep screed at the base and clearance above the soil or paving. Stone set tight to grade wicks water and fails early. Basement walls are a similar story. If a foundation wall is damp, the moisture has to be addressed before stone goes on it, or the veneer will stain and loosen.
Adhered veneer is light compared to full-thickness stone and does not need its own footing, which is why it works on upper-floor fireplaces in rowhomes. If your fireplace is in use, the veneer and its setting materials have to respect the clearances around the firebox. A closed-off decorative fireplace gives more freedom.

Stone Veneer in Philadelphia: FAQ
Can stone veneer go over my painted brick fireplace?
Yes, with the right prep. Paint is not a reliable bonding surface, so we fasten metal lath to the brick and apply a scratch coat, then set the stone into that. Unpainted, clean brick can sometimes take the scratch coat directly.
Can you match the Wissahickon schist on my house?
We can try to get close, but an exact match is unlikely with manufactured stone. Natural thin veneer is the better route. We bring samples to hold against your existing wall so you can judge the match in daylight before ordering.
Do I need approval to add stone to the front of my house?
If the property is historically designated or in a historic district, visible exterior changes generally need Philadelphia Historical Commission review, and a building permit may also apply. We check the property status and the permit requirements with you before planning exterior work.
Is stone veneer too heavy for an upstairs wall?
Adhered veneer is relatively light and is designed to be carried by the wall it is fastened to, not by a footing. Full-thickness stone is a different matter and is not something we would put on an upper floor of a rowhome.
